The first step was to collect all of these unique patients into one
facility as quickly as possible. One of the doctors, Jeremiah,
graciously offered the use of his home. It was a large
structure that had been previously occupied only by himself and his
wife, a nurse. I am fortunate enough to have a photograph in
my office of Jeremiah and his lovely wife, standing at the entrance
of their home, circa 1865.

Their home was offered with the
intention of being temporary, only until a more suitable facility
could be built. The location for where such an asylum should
reside was debated for so many years that by the time construction
was actually under way, Jeremiah had passed away. His wife
remained a dedicated nurse to the patients, even moving into the new
facility once it was completed. Although their story could never
be told due to the surrounding secrecy, I felt that it was time the
world knew of the couple who sacrificed their home and their lives
for a greater cause.
